A 14-hour day from downtown Mexico City to the grottoes, the terrace pools and the waterfalls, with a guide travelling alongside the group.
Updated 7 October 2026
This page is for solo travellers and for anyone who would rather not work the canyon out alone. The Tolantongo small group tour leaves Mexico City before dawn, runs 14 hours and keeps a professional guide with the group all day, which is the real difference from the transport-only departures. Price starts at $132 per adult and the rating is 4.6 from 351 reviews.
The drive is the reason the alarm goes off so early: Grutas Tolantongo is 201 km from Mexico City, about 3 h 50 min by road, so the meeting time is 5:30 am. Round-trip transport and entrance to the Tolantongo caves are included. Water is not, and the box lunch arrives only if you choose that option when booking, so plan on buying food and drinks inside the park.
Carry pesos in cash. Cards are not accepted anywhere inside the park, and the nearest cash machine is in Ixmiquilpan, an hour away, so withdraw in Mexico City the night before. The caves, tunnel, waterfalls and swimming pools run 8:00 to 17:00, while the thermal river and some terrace pools stay open until 21:00.
The operator's description names the Paraíso Escondido section, given as about 40 thermal pools stacked one above another on the cliff plus a pool with a slide, along with the túnel paraíso and its suspension bridge. The zipline sits in the same zone and is a paid extra, not part of the ticket: MXN 300 per person for the four launches of 320 m, 280 m, 690 m and 600 m, running 8:00 to 17:00, over-10s only, maximum 93 kg, no backpacks or caps and no launching with a wet body.
Pets are not allowed at any point, and firewood, gas canisters and alcoholic drinks cannot be brought in. Swimwear and footwear you can actually walk in are required for the grotto, the tunnel and the river; babies go in swim diapers only. On the suspension bridge, no running or pushing, and children stay supervised.
Fourteen hours from downtown Mexico City, round-trip transport, entrance to the Tolantongo caves and a professional guide with the group. Rated 4.6 from 351 reviews.

If the guide matters less to you than price or timing, three other departures cover the same canyon. Early & Express is the keenest peso price for an organised day and reaches the terrace pools before the crowds, with a 4:30 am meeting time. The Exclusive day is the only one that adds La Gloria, the neighbouring park run by a different ejido, and includes buffet breakfast, lunch, snacks and drinks. The full-day waters tour comes with a Mexican breakfast buffet and a kit backpack with headlamp, sport towel and waterproof phone cover, and it is the most reviewed of the four.
