Three ways out of the capital: your own car on the Pachuca motorway, a bus to Ixmiquilpan plus the cooperative's shuttle, or a round-trip departure that collects you in the city before dawn.
Updated 7 October 2026
The park is 201 km from the capital and the cooperative's own distance table allows 3 hours 50 minutes for it, so every version of this trip begins in the dark. Three routes are realistic: your own car, a bus to Ixmiquilpan followed by the cooperative's shuttle down into the canyon, or an organised round trip that picks you up in the city.
What decides between them is the clock inside the park rather than the distance. The grotto, the tunnel, the waterfalls and the swimming pools work 8:00 to 17:00; only the thermal river and part of the terrace bank stay open until 21:00. Walk through the gate at midday and half of what you came for is already on a countdown.
With a car and at least one other person in it, drive and set off well before dawn. Without a car, an organised departure is the version that gets you from a city street to the pools and back inside a single day, because the public chain finishes with a 17:30 shuttle out of Tolantongo.
A 13-hour day from $137 with park tickets and an air-conditioned vehicle included, built around a 4:30 am meet so you are in the pools when they open at 8:00.

The official route is simple to follow. Take the México–Pachuca motorway, continue on the Actopan–Ixmiquilpan road as far as Ixmiquilpan, then turn right onto the Libramiento a Cardonal. Tolls on the CAPUFE route come to roughly MXN 127 in total, of which MXN 72 is charged for a car at the Ojo de Agua booth on the México–Pachuca stretch.
From Ixmiquilpan there are 42.9 km left and the operator times them at 1 hour 11 minutes. That figure is honest. The road works its way towards Cardonal and then drops in tight bends to the canyon floor at 1,280 metres, and in heavy mountain rain both the surface and the view ahead get worse.
Ignore the Santiago de Anaya to El Cardonal shortcut when you plan. When the road was last checked by reporters, in January 2026, the work was still incomplete, parts of it were in poor condition and neither the municipality nor the state had put a date on finishing it; Ixmiquilpan remains the way the park itself tells drivers to come.
Leaving the car costs MXN 50 a day per vehicle, and the wording on the cooperative's price list is worth reading before you park: you are buying a space and nothing else, with no custody arrangement and no liability accepted for damage or for anything that goes missing. Deal with money in Ixmiquilpan before you start the descent: cards are accepted nowhere inside the park and the nearest cash machine is back in that town, an hour away.

Two legs, with a change in Ixmiquilpan. The park's directions send travellers from gates 7 and 8 of the Central del Norte terminal in Mexico City on OVNIBUS or FLECHA ROJA to Ixmiquilpan. If you are breaking the trip in Pachuca, the same town is served from the Central de Autobuses 'Carlos Martínez Balmori' by PAI, AVM and CONEXION, quoted at about 1 hour 38 minutes direct for MXN 42 to 61 one way, with Conexión listing roughly 18 departures between 05:15 and 19:15 and about 15 returns.
The final 42.9 km are the cooperative's own business. Its external shuttle goes from the parking area beside the San Antonio church in north Ixmiquilpan at MXN 80 per person per trip. Monday through Thursday the English timetable on the park's site shows five runs down, at 09:30, 11:30, 13:30, 15:30 and 17:30; Friday to Sunday they go on the hour between 09:30 and 17:30. Collective microbuses cover the same stretch from the same lot. Published times and the times actually running are not always identical, so confirm when you buy your seat.
For the ride back up, the first departure from Tolantongo is shown at 7:30, then 11:30, 13:30, 15:30 and a final 17:30. There is also a shorter hop, MXN 30 a head between the park and Molanguito 8 km away, which starts at 06:00 and finishes at 22:00 early in the week and stretches to 05:00–23:00 from Friday.
This chain is comfortable enough for a solo traveller sleeping in Ixmiquilpan or inside the park. It is not built for a same-day return to the capital. Take the 09:30 up and the attractions are already open when you arrive; take the 17:30 back and you hand over the evening river hours, which are the quietest part of the day.
The last vehicle out of Tolantongo on the public timetable leaves at 17:30. That means walking away from the terraces while they still have three and a half hours of opening left, changing again in Ixmiquilpan, and then covering the distance back to the capital. Miss a connection in either direction and you are looking for a room, which in the park is cash only and, in three of the five lodging sections, rented on arrival with no reservation possible.
Driving removes the timetable and replaces it with roughly eight hours at the wheel inside one day, the second half of it on the canyon road after several hours in water the park reports at 36 to 38 °C in the cave and terrace pools. Rain changes the picture again: the operator identifies mid-June to mid-July as its rainy period, heavy mountain rain can raise the river fast, and in July 2021 the grottoes were cordoned off and campers moved to higher ground.
Organised departures deal with the problem by starting very early and absorbing the road in both directions. The Mexico City options on this site meet at 4:30 am for the express day, 5:30 am for the small group and 5:35 to 5:50 am for the full day, and run 13 to 16 hours door to door for exactly the reason the drive does.

Prices are given as the operators publish them, in USD or MXN, with no conversion. On-site costs are always in pesos and always in cash.

We are an independent site selling tours run by licensed operators, with no connection to the cooperative that owns the park. Cancel any of these departures at least 24 hours ahead of its start time and the whole fare comes back to you.
No. The park's own directions send you to Ixmiquilpan first, on OVNIBUS or FLECHA ROJA from gates 7 and 8 of the Central del Norte terminal. The remaining 42.9 km down into the canyon are on the cooperative's external shuttle, MXN 80 per person each way, or on one of the collective microbuses that use the same lot next to the San Antonio church in the north of Ixmiquilpan.
The caves, tunnel, waterfalls and swimming pools only run 8:00 to 17:00, and the ticket office opens at 6:00. With 3 hours 50 minutes of road each way, a driver aiming for the 8:00 opening is leaving in the small hours. Organised departures meet between 4:30 and 5:50 am for the same reason.
Enough for the whole visit, because cards are not accepted anywhere in the park and the nearest machine is an hour back up the road. Admission is MXN 230 per person and is charged per day, parking MXN 50 per vehicle per day, the internal shuttle between sections MXN 15 to 20 per person, a locker MXN 150 with MXN 50 returned with the key, and the zipline MXN 300 per person on top.
Yes, and it shortens the drive to 117 km and about 2 hours 28 minutes on the official distance table. Three lines cover Pachuca to Ixmiquilpan, PAI, AVM and CONEXION; the direct run is timed at about 1 hour 38 minutes, one-way tickets are MXN 42 to 61, and Conexión's schedule shows something like 18 departures spread between 05:15 and 19:15. You then join the same shuttle for the canyon road.
Each departure we list is operated by a licensed company and can be cancelled for a full refund up to 24 hours before its scheduled start time. That matters in the rainy months, when heavy mountain rain can raise the river and muddy the water. If you are watching the forecast, keep the 24-hour mark in mind.
